Alumni

2010 marks Beta Mu’s 90th year. The active chapter appreciates the ongoing support of Beta Mu alumni in maintaining a strong Beta Mu Chapter. The time, treasure and talent that our loyal alums provide is invaluable to maintaining Pike’s place as a respected and popular fraternity in Austin.

The Alumni Advisory Board was recently expanded for 2010 and includes Alumni Advisory Board Chairman Russ Keene ’80 and Vice Chairman Doug Phelan ’65. We are profoundly grateful for Doug Phelan’s fifteen years of leadership as alumni chairman. The other new advisory board members are Chris Bean ’83, Steve Dunn ‘73, Steve Glasgow ‘82, Todd Hasie ‘81, Gianni LaBarba ‘96, Aaron Motsinger ’07, Phil Maxwell ‘63, Jon Saperstein ‘07, Jon Strieby ‘97, Jimmy Walsdorf ‘82, and Ken Womack ‘81. Participation is voluntary and alums are invited to serve. We also thank our long-serving Chapter Adviser Amb. Stan McLelland ‘64 and the dedicated House Corporation Chairman Don Flournoy ‘66.

In July, Beta Mu honored Brother Ed Hyman ’65 (pictured right with his wife Caroline and son Curtis) with a reception at 2400 Leon following the International Pike Fraternity conferring its Distinguished Alumni Award upon Ed during the 2010 International Convention. Ed, a longtime resident of New York, has indeed distinguished himself in business and service to others throughout his career. At the annual convention Ed was introduced by his Beta Mu big brother Tom Gentry ’64 of Austin. Both Tom and Ed fondly recalled their UT days and the importance of Beta Mu in their lives. Ed was feted at the Pike House in Austin where today’s undergraduates thanked Ed for his lead gift to the 2009 chapter house improvements and unveiled a new plaque noting Ed’s generous financial gifts. Doug Phelan ’65 presided over the evening festivities for Ed. Amongst those celebrating with Ed were Rex Cotton ‘63, Bert Dement ‘66, Skip Henkel, Greg Jones, Phil Kendrick, Mark Lesher ‘66 and his son Clay Lesher ‘97, Phil Maxwell ‘63, Bob Milstead, Bob Savage ‘67, Stephen Van Vliet and Joe Wyatt. Scroll down for more photos of the Hyman reception.

Our second year of Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio summer alumni receptions were held in May and June and we thank the many alums who participated this year and made contributions to rush and house improvements. Scroll down for photos from the summer 2010 Austin and Dallas alum events.

The chapter will hold pre-football game tailgates in a large, sanctioned tailgate lot facing the Bob Bullock State History Museum, near Darrel K Royal Memorial Stadium before every home game in Fall 2010 (except the Baylor game which is a philanthropic event for Big Brothers-Big Sisters). All Beta Mu alums and family are welcome to drop by the Pike tailgate trailer on the parking lot east of Congress Avenue, just south of MLK Blvd (19th Street). A Beta Mu alumni weekend will also be announced in October so check the website for updates.

Please note the new on-line alum registration option. Please click the box above to provide us your name, initiation year and email address so that you can stay informed. For any alum questions or to make a rush recommendation, write to alumni@texaspikes.com. Watch the calendar here at TexasPikes.com for alumni news and updates. Thank you to all of our alumni for their continued support, contributions, and guidance.

SUMMER 2009 ALUMNI RECEPTIONS

In the first of several summer 2009 alumni receptions around the state, Dallas and Fort Worth area Beta Mu alumni gathered at Dallas Country Club on May 19. Hosting the cocktail reception were Steve Ray ’69; Chris Jones ’70; Cass Robinson ’76; Russ Keene ’80; Ryan Thompson ’97; and Brad Harris ’02. Thirty alums were joined by six actives from the Dallas area who had just completed their Spring semester finals and were arriving home for the summer. Almost one-half of the active chapter members are from North Texas, and the alums were encouraged to help with rushee referrals and support of DFW area rush.

Alumni also gathered throughout Summer 2009 at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Westwood Country Club in Austin and the San Antonio Country Club. Each of the gatherings had more than thirty alumni present. A similar Summer 2010 Alumni Reception Series is in planning.
